Above, Down, Inside, Out . . . Part 5: The Faith Factor

HEALING HANDS

“Verily I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”(Matt 17:20)

THE ELDERLY GRANDFATHER appeared somewhat subdued as he presented at my office for his weekly attunement session. We had been sharing attunement for several weeks and Earl loved the deep peace and serenity he experienced as I held his head and upper cervical region between my hands. Then I would move my hands so as to encompass his entire physical anatomy and physiology through the parietal lobes of the brain, entering his body temple through the energy portal of the Central Sulcus, a very powerful contact. It’s the soft spot atop an infant’s cranium which eventually calcifies.

Shortly after completing our session, Earl asked if I would be willing to share attunement with his great-grandson. He went on to explain that the little nineteen-month-old boy was in the hospital in New Orleans with kidney failure awaiting transplant surgery. His mother was being prepped to give him one of her kidneys. My initial response was that the hospital would not allow me, a chiropractor, into his room to offer my service to the child. Earl emphatically responded, “NO! I MEAN FROM HERE!”

Now, the hospital was eighty miles away. Seeing his absolute faith, confidence and belief, I had no inclination to deny Earl his request. I simply offered him my agreement and instructed him to lie down on his right side on the adjusting table.

Standing behind the elderly gentleman, I proceeded to extend my hands over his kidney area, after acknowledging my connection with Source, in search of a pattern. Much to my surprise, I felt a somewhat large sphere of erratic energy between my hands. Then, within less than a minute, the ball of energy began to dissipate, similar to a balloon loosing its air. It was gone within a few moments. So I told Earl I felt we had done all we could do. He got up from the table, thanked me and I returned my thanks to him for seeking my agreement in his deep compassionate desire to help his great-grandson. I had never met such absolute faith in a patient.

The next morning, choked up with tears, Earl called to tell me he had received word from the hospital at two in the morning that the child had urinated normally in his bed and had been taken off dialysis. The transplant surgery was shortly canceled and the lad was discharged from the hospital the next couple of days. How utterly overjoyed we both were. I didn’t have to go to the hospital to share attunement with him. Earl was holding him in his heart. He had brought his little great-grandson with him vibrationally. His love for the child made them one and provided a carrier wave for Spirit and for our intention, and Love never fails us.

This was my first “long-distance attunement” and a very rich blessing to Earl, to his great-grandson and his parents, as well as to myself. So, many hearts were lifted up in prayers of gratitude for what the doctors themselves said was “nothing short of a miracle!” All it took was two in agreement in the current of love, just like the centurion in the Gospel. Through our agreement, a “mountain” of interference to the flow of the River of Life in the little boy’s body was removed. To this day, I give profound thanks to the Father within for finding me a worthy instrument for His “works” of healing and increasing life abundantly in those who were led to my Chiropractic service. I saw the little boy a few days later and he was just a bundle of joy. I am blessed beyond words.

ATTUNEMENT IS MAGNETIC HEALING . . . AND MORE

I promised to share the above story in this series, and I do so fully aware of its occurring outside the box of the science and art of Chiropractic . . . not, however, outside the scope of Chiropractic philosophy. Healing through Attunement is “magnetic healing,” what D.D. Palmer was offering before Chiropractic was born through his healing hands . . . and it’s more than that.

TECHNIQUE AND METHODOLOGY DON’T MATTER

There are colleagues who will object to what I just wrote. Let us remember, however, that Love’s healing current is no respecter of person or technique. Jesus, Love incarnate, used mud to heal a blind man’s eyesight. He didn’t need the mud, but He likely felt the blind man did. The Healing Power of Love moves through any technique and is no respecter of technique or methodology.

Attunement doesn’t “belong” to a group or organization, although it is housed and taught by Emissaries of Divine Light (EDL). It’s also held sacred and taught by Chris Jorgensen and friends of the International Association of Attunement Practitioners (IAAP). Both organizations do offer a certificate to those who complete the training. Anyone and everyone can, with proper training, offer Attunement to another. Chiropractic, on the other hand, does “belong” to a licensed profession, as does surgery and the administration of prescription drugs.

LAWS DO IMPOSE LIMITATIONS

On a side note, our dad used to adjust our necks when we had an illness. He learned the technique from his barber who had had some training, which was not uncommon in those days, several years after medical students got their training following a doctor around on his house calls. We always felt better afterwards. The barber, of course, was told by the powers that were to stop adjusting his customers. I will add that adjusting a segment of the spine has its risks, especially where an x-ray of the spine isn’t used to see what the condition the bones are in. Proper examination is important so as not to cause any harm.

It may have been unwise of me, but I never bought malpractice insurance, except when I worked out of another doctor’s clinic and had to have it. I made sure that I didn’t malpractice. I was sued only once by a man whose charge against me was that I injured his child. I had to hire an attorney to determine that the man had beat up his own daughter and tried to escape the law . . . and make some money . . . by blaming me. Upon learning I had no malpractice insurance, he withdrew his charge. A famous lawyer once wrote that he could count his real malpractice cases on one hand. All the rest were poor doctor-patient rapport. But enough with my fuss over injustices. What else can one expect in a world out of balance and oriented in filthy lucre?! We reap according to the nature of our sowing.

Dr. Jim Parker, whom I’ve referenced earlier, used to say at his practice-building seminars, we must have Faith, Confidence and Belief in our Product, Service and Idea. BJ Palmer taught, “Get the Big Idea, all else will follow.” The fact that a patient is present in my office indicates faith, confidence and belief are fully present. They were certainly present with Earl, providing an open avenue for the healing current to move through to his great-grandson eighty miles away . . . but only geographically. Vibrationally, there was no distance between Earl and his great-grandson. His love made them one. All I did was offer him a point of agreement and mediation with Source. All else followed. “The Father within, He doeth the works.” I think we know very little about the power of two in agreement on earth as touching the critical events in life that come our way. We are not isolated from one another . . . nor from Source. “No man is an island,” as a poet once penned.*

I’ve enjoyed a rich and successful career in the field of healthcare. Chiropractic was more to me than a technique for fixing backaches, neckaches and headaches. It was an instrument in my healing hands for releasing “. . . the imprisoned impulse, the tiny rivulet of force, that emanates from the mind and flows over the nerves to the cells, and stirs them into life . . . the magic power that transforms common food into living, loving, thinking clay; that robes the earth with beauty, and hues and scents the flowers with glory.” For fifty years I was privileged to work with “the subtle substance of the soul” flowing in and through the many souls who came to the light of my shining. As for results, I wasn’t concerned with them. I simply let love radiate as I delivered the “Big Idea” and let all else follow in Life’s perfect way and timing. My protection came from the One Whose life it is and Whom I served. It was all good.

“IMAGINE”

“Do not fear when the winds of adversity blow. Remember: the kite rises against the wind rather than with it.”

This saying was on a poster picture hanging on the wall of my doctor’s orthopedic clinic today.  There was no credit given, however its author might well have been the doctor himself, a very personable and encouraging individual with an optimistic outlook on life—on top of being a great surgeon. The saying itself is very applicable to our time of adversity where we fear for our lives in the face of a very aggressive virus sweeping the planet and harvesting souls in such an unprecedented and untimely manner—angels ascending on “Jacob’s ladder” without a pause. Hopefully, the vaccination will slow it down . . . and, if it follows the usual path viruses take, COVID-19 will run its two-year course before mutating to a less viral version, with or without a vaccine.  (See my HealthLight Newsletter for important information about the Covid-19 vaccine.)

As many are recognizing, we are on the threshold of a major reset in our way of living on the planet.  Radical change is being forced upon us by dire circumstances: this pandemic, climate change, violent shifts in weather patterns—hurricanes, snow storms, floods, droughts and wild fires.  On top of all that is the solar eclipse in Sagittarius on December 14. (Go to Pam Gregory for a complete astrological forecast.) 

The reset underway, however, is not in a downward but rather an upward spiraling direction.  A new day has dawned.  A New Earth is unfolding out of the New Heaven descending upon human consciousness.  Another Golden Age is at hand.  Lift up your heads and face the winds of change and rise to greet the New Day!

IMAGING A DIFFERENT WORLD  

Imagination is a mental activity.  Imaging, on the other hand, takes place in our consciousness.  My imaging lately is of an anticipatory nature.  I find myself imaging the kinds of changes we will undergo as “new norms” set in—especially in the way we buy and sell services and products.  With so many unemployed and lacking funds to feed their children, heat their homes and pay their rent, what are we going to do?  The only solution I can imagine is to circumvent our monetary system altogether and start giving to one another according to each one’s needs and means.  We CAN DO this, you know.  

This I know from personal experience back along the way when I placed my healthcare services on a giving basis, as I related in the previous post. The following is the article I wrote about that pioneering event while attending an Ontology Training Class with my family in 1973 at Sunrise Ranch in Loveland, Colorado.  (I was participating in a class “work pattern” at Sunrise Ranch when this picture was taken.  Even as I write this post, I am putting the finishing touches on our storm-damaged floors, the last item on our list of home repairs! Yea!).  Enjoy the read.

“HOW DO YOU LIVE, DOCTOR?” 

This is a question that I find myself answering day after day in my chiropractic office. It comes as a spontaneous reaction to my answer to a previous question, that inevitable question that tends to crash through the air during a heart-to-heart conference with the patient: “And how much will all this cost me. Doctor?” Of course it is interestingly worded in many dif­ferent and revealing ways, like: “What will the damages be?” and “How much will this set me back?” or “And what are we talking about … ?” (“In terms of cost” is im­plied here but for some strange reason fearfully avoided.)

My answer depends somewhat on which way the crucial question is phrased, but always leads to a basic presentation of our Cooperative Fee System: “There are no charges, as such, for our services. Our patients give each according to their individual means for our service, which is given freely. You also may participate with us in this program.” (This is basically the “GPC Service Principle” which was initiated by Dr. George Shears some thirty years ago and which has become the basis of service for many chiropractors across the continent. The initials stand for: God-Patient-Chiropractor.)

The reaction to this different approach has overtones of mystification. The immediate interpretation of it usually implies that the good doctor is either participating in some government sponsored research program, or is independently wealthy.  If neither of these, then he is certainly a generous Christian man, but he doesn’t know how dishonest people are—and how can he survive if he doesn’t ask a fee for his services! So the question forthrightly pops up: “Well, how do you live, Doctor?”

I always appreciate this benevolent concern for the doctor’s welfare as well as the patient’s lack of immediate comprehension of the full implications in my answer to his simple question. After all, his mind is geared to receive dollars and cents signs and I give it the cosmic creative principle of Giving and Receiving. Nevertheless, it is inter­esting to see this underlying error in human thinking: that health, and therefore life, is a matter of dollars and cents.  On one occasion, a gentleman who simply could not wrap his brain around this principle, vehemently insisted I charge a fee for his care.  When I refused to back down, he got up and walked out of my office.  I felt compassion for him, understanding well the challenge I had placed before him.  

Being aware of this disproportion in human minds, mainly because I’ve dealt with it in my own, I’ve learned to look beyond it and to see a sincere innate curiosity in the patient’s question—-an inner knowingness, latent perhaps but very real, that there must be a right way of doing things in all facets of our living. So I address myself to this truth in them and gladly oblige to let them fill this void in their hearts with a true response to a genuine offer.  These mo­ments always lead to a most warm and relaxing conversation and exchange of honest feelings. As far as I am concerned, the healing processes go into action here in these relaxed moments of agreement and insight.

One day, as I was explaining to a new patient how this approach allowed me to be free to do whatever might be needed and right for the patient’s return to health without being limited by a set price on my services, he was so taken with delightful surprise that he burst out laughing. I asked him what it was that amused him so. He replied, “Well, to be honest, I was not sure at first that I was hearing cor­rectly. I thought I was the oddball in my thinking about service and money. This has been my exact attitude for years. When I service an engine, my mechanics are con­stantly encouraged to work on the basis of integrity and honesty, and we do the job right or else the customer doesn’t pay for it until it is right. And you know, that’s the only way to operate a business successfully. Just be honest and open with your customers and take pride in doing the job right, just for the sake of doing it right­ and preferably the first go at it.”

Well, as you can imagine, I was thrilled to meet such a man and I’ll always remember the intense feeling of agree­ment we shared together in those few moments and the subsequent rapport that even now continues to grow between us. I think it was then that I stopped trying to measure the immeasurable rewards of true and noble service.

Integrity, honesty, nobility, kindness–when demon­strated openly, these qualities of man’s true nature always engender the same character in those with whom we have our daily transactions. And I think we need to deliberately put this to practice in our every moment and aspect of life by beginning to be perceptive and sensitive enough to see the rightness in others. Even if others do resist giving it forth in their expression themselves, we know that it’s there in them because we know it is true in us. So we can learn to really serve by giving one another an opportunity to release our inherent sense of rightness–addressing ourselves to that in one another and trusting that we will touch what’s right and beautiful. We can learn to be patient in this and masters in the art of true living. This IS the real busi­ness at hand for all men and women of Earth in these
momentous times.♥

ABOUT THOSE “LOAVES AND FISHES”

In my gut feeling, the “miracle of the loves and fishes” was about sharing and not about multiplying.  The biblical story portrays the Teacher manifesting food for the crowd.  I rather believe that when the people saw His disciples sharing their bread and fishes with others, those who had brought food with them began sharing it with those who had not.  Thus the crowd was fed, and there were even leftovers.  That, to me, was the real message of the story—a story about the abundance of provision in the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth.  Wealth is to be shared around and not hoarded. 

“IMAGINE” 

Attunement colleagues and friends reminded me today that this year marks 40 years since John Lennon left this earthly sphere after being gunned down.  I leave you, then, with the lyrics of his legendary signature song, IMAGINE.

As I look back to the 1980’s, we had just completed a fourteen year cycle practicing our profession on the GPC no-fee system. I say “we” because I was joined by two other colleagues seven years later when I moved my practice to Baton Rouge, Louisiana from Denham Springs.  So, we were unknowingly modeling a way of serving and living as John Lennon imagined it could be.  I suppose we were dreamers as well—and I’m still dreaming, imaging a New Earth.  Enjoy the lyrics.

“The Hero’s Journey”. . . . part 2: The Journey

My Journey in Chiropractic and the Healing Field

My professional journey in life began when I turned twenty-one and left the seminary to pursue a career in Chiropractic. The year was 1961. I graduated from Chiropractic college in 1963 and immediately moved south with my family and opened my first practice in Crowley, Louisiana in the Winter of 1963-64. The Healing Field was ripe for a new paradigm of health care and I was eager to deliver it. 

Little did I know then that my journey through the field of health care was to be a journey of the profession I had joined that was already engaged in a political battle with its nemesis: the medical profession, the Guardian of the Threshold leading to licensure as a separate, distinct and independent profession with a vitalistic philosophy and a drugless healing science and art.

A Battle for Licensure and Freedom of Choice

I joined in the fight for licensure here in Louisiana, my home state — as well as the battle for patients’ “Freedom of Choice” in health care, a separate journey and battle led by a group of passionate Chiropractic patients with whom we shared a common cause and a common nemesis.

After several years of legislative efforts — and court battles to stop the arrest and jailing of chiropractors — we finally defeated our nemesis in 1974 when Louisiana became the last state in the Union to license Chiropractors. It also became the last state to grant patients the freedom and right to go to the doctor of their choice.

The victory was a partial one, however, as licensure was not the ultimate goal of the profession’s quest. The ultimate goal, the Elixir of Immortality, was access to health insurance, the Golden Goose, well guarded by the insurance industry: equality under the law with Medicine in the reimbursement for Chiropractic services. Licensure was only a means to this end — an end that, to this day, Medicine is bent on denying chiropractors by controlling how freely and deeply they are allowed to dip into the Golden Goose’s nesteggs. After all, health insurance was a creation of medical doctors as a way of insuring they got paid for their services. So it’s their game and they don’t want anyone else dipping into their fee-pool. Stiff restrictions and fine-bearing compliance laws have been put in place via HIPPA, making it costly and time-consuming for doctors to file and follow up with reimbursement claims. Documentation has become one of the dreaded aspects of modern day health care, seconded by the escalating cost of malpractice insurance in a litigious society to which healthcare providers dedicate their lives of service. So, the insurance industry has become a nemesis to both professions by determining the amount of the reimbursement for services rendered. 

All this to say the field of healthcare — a misnomer in itself — does not have the same lure of attraction it had when I entered it some fifty-six years ago. Medicine continues to be a nemesis to the Chiropractic profession — but only as long as chiropractors worship at the altar of the insurance industry and hold financial remuneration as their primary goal, their Elixir of Immortality.

There is a trade-off, however, in this pursuit for insurance equality alongside Medicine. That trade-off is the surrender of the very soul of Chiropractic, nourished by its philosophy, which honors the Innate Power of the human body to heal itself naturally and without the toxic and invasive intervention of drugs and surgery. A motto of the chiropractors, once held religiously, was “Chiropractic first—Medicine second—surgery last.”

Sadly, that trade-off was made by the bulk of the members of our beloved profession, along with all but a few of its colleges, who continue in the sacred philosophical tradition of our Beloved Founder and developer, Drs. D.D. and B.J. Palmer, respectively.  

A schism has rocked the profession at its very foundation, sending it down the same lost path Osteopathy took, as many chiropractors began to look more and more like medical doctors, prescribing diagnostic tests, and in some states even delivering babies, all the while selling out their inheritance for the proverbial mess of porridge.  They had turned their backs on the holistic model of natural health care and embraced the reductionistic medical model of relieving pain and treating symptoms, settling for acceptance by their medical colleagues as musculoskeletal specialists, an area of expertise in which chiropractors excel.  

Heralds of Vibrational Healing

Chiropractic was born on September 18, 1895, in Watcheer, Iowa. through the heart and hands of a magnetic healer, Daniel D. Palmer. That places it at the fountainhead of vibrational healing and what today is called “energy medicine.” Daniel Palmer had a large vision of his new healing art becoming more a spiritual than a physical remedy for all of mankind’s diseases — or dis-eases, as his son, BJ, spelled it in order to describe illness as a lack of ease. This vision became the Palmers’ quest, their Elixir of Immortality. Their belief in the innate healing power of the body, along with the discovery of the spinal adjustment, led them to the principle of natural healing: Remove the interference to the unfettered flow and expression of life energy and let the body heal itself. They took the “whole man” into consideration to determine the cause of the patient’s dis-ease, along with the solution for a cure. That cause was seen as being “quantitative” as well as “qualitative”– physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual — or a combination thereof. In other words, they looked for the cause of dis-ease in higher levels than just the physical and chemical. They sought the cause of the cause of the effects of dis-ease. The obvious solution and cure, then, was to correct or remove the cause, the interference, and the manifest symptoms would simply no longer be necessary to signal a need for change — change in lifestyle and/or mental and emotional stress and attitude. The symptoms would then simply abate naturally. 

This was and is the essence of the Holistic model of healthcare, an entirely new and different model from the medical reductionistic model of disease management — both being essential in the healthcare arena. The ideal is for both to work together for the benefit of the patients they serve. 

Evolution of Health Care

As health care itself evolved, our professional journey merged into a collective and global journey of the Human Species in search for the Elixir of Immortality in the field of health-and-wellness care.  Building and maintaining a healthy physique has become the focus of health-and-wellness centers throughout the land. “Functional Medicine” is the latest buzz word among chiropractors who are exploring the benefits of nutrition in restoring function to failing organs, tissues and glands. “Clinical Nutrition” has come into the holistic model here in the West, as the cause of more and more diseases was found to be related to poor dietary habits and an “Empty Harvest,” as Dr. Bernard Jensen describes our commercially grown fruits and vegetables in his book by the same name. Depleted soil can only render foods deficient in vital nutrients, resulting in missing cogs in the nutrient chain, thereby creating an interference to the flow of vital life force in and through the body. This is a modality that I have found to be essential in my practice.

Acupuncture and several other techniques, such as BioEnergetic Synchronization (BEST), have also emerged as energy-oriented healing methodologies to take their places in Western Holistic Medicine.  Eastern healing traditions have long been harbingers of holistic healing and many of their traditions have found their way into our healthcare systems. Practices such as meditation and yoga have become popular, and gyms are popping up everywhere.

This revolution in health-and-wellness care has drawn the attention of the Guardian of the Threshold, the medical licensing boards in states where chiropractic boards have expanded their scope of practice to include procedures that heretofore have been the exclusive domain of Medicine.  With the emergence of Applied Clinical Nutrition, Contact Reflex Analysis (muscle testing) and Functional Endocrinology, such conditions as diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and even autoimmune disease are being treated and reversed by chiropractors and other alternative practitioners, much to the objection of medical licensing boards. Law suits have been filed and fines levied.

This is not stopping the evolution of health care, however. People have awakened and started to assume responsibility for their own health, a responsibility that had been placed in the willing and able hands of Modern Medicine — which unfortunately has cornered the market on the treatment of disease, especially of Diabetes, Coronary Heart Disease, Cancer, and other autoimmune diseases. 

The Torch Has Not Been Entirely Dropped

“Alternative healthcare” made its debut in the last half of the twentieth century carrying the torch of holistic healing into the New Age of Aquarius. Holistic practitioners began popping up throughout the healing field. The words Attunement and Sound Healing entered our vocabulary as energy healing modalities. I was introduce to a model of Attunement in the late nineteen-sixties that works with the energy fields around the endocrine glands, as well as with the Chakra energy centers of the Eastern tradition and Reiki. I later incorporated Sound Healing into my attunement service. The consciousness of humanity has begun to shift to a higher frequency of awareness that has awakened a realization that we are spiritual beings having a human experience rather than physical beings having a spiritual experience.

This realization was actually dawning as early as the turn of the twentieth century when BJ Palmer published The Bigness of the Fellow Within in which he tells stories about the “Giant and the pigmy”– the inner spiritual Self and the outer mental self, or the “Innate Intelligence” and the “educated intelligence.” This realization lit up his mind and put a fire in his heart that burned passionately for several decades and was carried forward by those who came to the light of his shining and became inspired to bring forth a new paradigm of vibrational healing.

As the fire began to cool in their hearts and the light began to dim in their minds, the torch was set aside in lieu or a “more scientific” approach to Chiropractic. Now the torch has been given to others to carry forward along with a new paradigm of health care which honors the innate healing powers of the body. We’ve come full cycle back, or forward, to our humble beginnings as magnetic healers, only now calling ourselves “Holistic Healers” and “Energy Workers.” A small but passionate number of chiropractors still carry the flame in their hearts and in their clinics. The Torch has not been entirely dropped.

The table has been turned

Alternative health care has now become Medicine’s nemesis as more and more doctors are returning to school and abandoning the reductionistic model in lieu of the holistic model of true health care. Chiropractors, MD’s and Acupuncturists are attending seminars to educate and certify themselves in clinical nutrition, herbal medicine and other modalities emerging with the holistic paradigm. It’s what the people want and are asking for, and the people have the final say in such personal matters as their health. And the irony of it all is that health insurance doesn’t cover alternative health care.

The wave has been set in motion and it will dissolve the monopolistic stronghold Medicine has assumed over health care.  It will ultimately be defeated by its nemesis and be forced to vacate its self-appointed role as the Guardian of the Threshold to the health care arena.  Licensing boards will not be able to stem the tide of this revolution as they become swamped by law suits from doctors and non-medical practitioners in the field who dare to take on the reversal and cure of diseases only Medicine has held the legal right to treat. 

It’s a new day . . . thank God! And I am glad to have lived long enough to see it and be a part of its dawning. God bless our doctors, especially our surgeons, whose hearts are in the right place of compassion for the sick and suffering and have only a prescription pad and a scalpel between them and their patients.  The vast world of Mother Nature’s Cornucopia of natural medicines lies open and ready to heal all our ills.
