The “Jesus of History” Vs the “Jesus of Faith” part 3:2 – Experiencing the Source

Christianity, as it was conceived and brought forth as a religion–initially by the Jewish Zealots at the time of Jesus and three decades later by Constantine and the Council of Nicaea–interrupted a cycle of restoration that Jesus initiated with his life of unconditional love and compassion. In that sense, it was and is a failure. The kingdom of heaven remains only a belief, a concept in human consciousness, a place to go to after we die, but nevertheless a largely unrevealed reality behind the manifest world of human existence. I say “largely” because the Natural World continues to manifest the glorious revelation of the kingdom of heaven on Earth, especially in the spring. In a word, what we long for and seek is to go beyond belief and into a personal experience of God. This the Christian religion has failed to deliver. We’ve had to find it on our own by way of various transformational spiritual paths.

It also interrupted a much larger cycle of spiritual evolution that began with Abraham, the great patriarch of Judaism, and the children of Abraham, the nation of Israel. It ended with the collapse of Egypt as the world center of religion, mysticism and esoteric knowledge.

Actually, the cycle initiated with Abraham ended with the fall of King Solomon’s reign and empire. He had gathered and united many empires under one by taking their princesses and queens as wives, of which he simply had more than he could placate and still maintain stewardship of the cycle he was bringing to a potentially victorious climax and completion. His was a classic example, yet again, of the Man being distracted by  the Woman to the abandonment of his purpose in the divine scheme of restoration, a repetition of the same pattern of failure enacted by the parents of the human race in the Garden of Eden–a pattern that continues to be enacted between the men and women to this day. But not all was lost.

I ended the last post on a transitional note marking the end of the Egyptian era and the beginning of the Christian era. In this post, I will take a look at this transitional period and see how something great and significant did come out of Egypt besides Jesus, the Messiah. I will continue sharing religious historian Michael Baigent’s thought-provoking perspectives from his extensively researched book The Jesus Papers—Exposing the Greatest Cover-Up in History.

The Hermetic Texts

The Egyptian priests sought to preserve their secrets by learning the Greek language in which they wrote an entire collection of wisdom texts that circulated under the name Hermes, but for which they drew their essentials from Egyptian tradition. This collection of literature was attributed to the ancient Egyptian god Thoth, aka “Hermes Trismegistus” in the late classical world. Baigent raps up this chapter with this insightful overview of the Hermetic roots of Western civilization and of the pagan roots of Christianity:

Above all, and of most relevance to our investigation, the Hermetic concept of man is “as a cosmic rather than a terrestrial being.'” The Greek gold plate (see the previous post) put it well: “My race is of Heaven [alone].”

A particular value of this Hermetic literature is that, despite its late production, it comes from the very source of the mysteries of the ancients and so can be used as a lens through which to view the earlier texts, allowing us to gain a deeper understanding of their true concerns.” Significantly, at the very heart of the Hermetic texts is the concept of mystical initiation: “Then he [Poimandres] sent me forth, empowered and instructed on the nature of the universe and on the supreme vision.”

It is still more curious that the production of these books of Hermes began about the time of Jesus and paralleled the rise of Christianity. At the end of the second century A.D., Clement, the Christian bishop of Alexandria, referred to them as “containing the whole philosophy of the Egyptians.” The pagan philosopher Iamblichus, writing a little later, was also aware of their importance: “Our ancestors dedicated the inventions of their wisdom to this deity, inscribing all their own writings with the name of Hermes.'”

This collection of texts . . . has had an enormous and incalculable effect upon the Western mind. It is fair to say that the Western world would not have developed as it did without them. Science itself might never have evolved without the impetus given by men and women enamored of these works. For they were rediscovered in the Renaissance and translated by Marsilio Ficino about 1463 at the behest of the wealthy Florentine banker Cosimo de Medici.

Going Home NOW

We all want to return Home—some of us, myself included, would like to be able to do so now while we breathe the air of this world. Our prodigal sojourn on Earth has left us hungering and thirsting for Home—for eternal life. And we will go Home, even if we have to die to get there. This belief that one has to die in order to go to heaven is central to Christian doctrine. The only trouble is Heaven is not “there.” It is here, waiting to be revealed where we are, here on planet Earth—where we’ve rather made a hell of a mess. For this reason alone, going Home has been an escape, or at least a reprieve, from our miserable plight.

Herein lies part of the deception hidden within the “Greatest Cover-Up in History” Michael Baigent has boldly brought to the fore for our critical examination and honest review. The truth has been adulterated with fabricated lies and what has been handed down as “truth” has been horded and sold to the faithful by a false priesthood. Baigent speaks to this here:

No one individual, no culture, no civilization, has a monopoly on truth. For this reason, we should not make the mistake of thinking that the techniques of entering the Far-World were known only to the Egyptians or the Greeks. The gates to the Far-World have always been open to those whose world-weary longing draws them across the divide.

And there were few more world-weary than those who came to be baptized in the River Jordan by John the Baptist, a unique event that even Catholic editors of the Jerusalem bible consider to be an initiation. Was this perhaps the true meaning of John’s statement, “The kingdom of heaven is close at hand?” (Matthew 3:2)

Jacob’s Ladder

This doorway to heaven has been sought after throughout the history of mankind. Bagent cites the story of Jacob’s ladder in the Old Testament as an example. If you recall the story, Jacob had a dream of a great ladder connecting heaven and earth with angels ascending and descending on it.  Upon awakening from his dream, he realizes that he is in a sacred place and, externalizing his dream, he exclaims: “This is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” He then proceeded to build an altar with stone and he called the place “Bethel” which means “the house of God.” (Genesis 28: 10-19)  What he didn’t realize was that the ladder and “gate of heaven” were not out there but within himself, as was the dream.

Now, the context of this story as Baigent tells it has to do with “sacred sites.” There are places on the surface of the Earth that are known even today as being “sacred” by reason of their vibrational frequency and their historical significance to ancient civilizations, such as Stone Hinge and Easter Island, to name just two of many such places on Earth where the veil between heaven and earth seems to be very thin. Jacob may have well been in one such high place. This veil, of course, is within the individuals who make pilgrimages to these sacred sites. The energy of such places is such that it impacts the individuals’ electromagnetic biosphere raising their vibratory frequency to a height where they experience an intensification of energy. The “house of God” is none other than the body temple itself.  I know this is true from personal experience in such a sacred place where the energetic field was rare and uplifting. For me, it was a direct experience of God—of my own divine Self.

In this sense, Baigent is astute in saying “there are places where the Far-World and the terrestrial world are linked—places that serve as the perfect conduit between the two worlds.”

I resonate with his interpretation of Jacob’s dream:

More significantly, Jacob’s “dream” is better understood as a vision, and one that teaches us a number of important things. Perhaps the most crucial lesion lies in the report of angels “ascending and descending.” This is clearly a symbolic demonstration that the link between heaven and earth is dynamic, that the divine qualities are constantly flowing to and fro (underscore mine). This expresses the idea we have already seen in Egypt that the Far-World and the terrestrial world are intimately—and dynamically—interlinked. This is proof, should we need it, that Jacob’s vision emerged from a living tradition of which this Old Testament report is just a fragment, a glimpse of the lush landscape of the promised land.

The Way was Blocked

Throughout the Old Testament, Baigent suggests, the link between the two worlds is portrayed as being broken, making the passage to and fro difficult if not impossible.

“. . . angelic beings with flaming swords block the entrance to the Garden of Eden; Jacob is not encouraged to climb the ladder to heaven. Religious administrators had apparently taken over the tradition and restricted its message about the pathway to the Far-World—much as Vatican strongmen did later with regard to the teachings of Jesus.

More accurately, the angels with flaming swords, according to the story, only blocked access to the Tree of Life. We must remember that this is a metaphorical story told and written down by Moses. We have no written record of what actually happened. The point the author is making, I believe, is that the way to the kingdom of heaven has been obstructed and access barred to the uninitiated.

There’s an event in the Gospel of Matthew (23:13) where Jesus rebukes the false priesthood of the Temple: “But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men; for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.”

But how did they “shut up the kingdom of heaven?” And what was their understanding of the nature of the kingdom of heaven? Was it the Far-World of Egyptian/Judaic mysticism? And what “kingdom of heaven” was Jesus referring to?

Baptism, a Pagan Ritual

This concept of the intimate relationship between heaven and earth along with the crossing over to the Far-World was huge in Egyptian tradition, which left its mystical mark on Judaism. A second influence came from Babylon during the Babylonian exile, when King of Babylon, Nebchadnezzar, “seized and captured Jerusalem in 587 B.C. and deported the Jewish king, along with thousands of people. Many others fled into exile in Egypt.”

We can see, for example, the Babylonian rite of baptism as the origin of the Jewish practice of purification before rituals, the aim being to separate the person from the terrestrial world while at the same time establishing a pure relationship with the divine world.

This pagan rite is enacted in the Christian culture as a sacrament, only for a different and fabricated purpose: to wash away the stigma of “original sin,” a sin that was allegedly committed by Adam and Eve, both of whom are fictitious characters created by the author of the Book of Genesis to represent our first parents. This is all part of the hidden agenda Baigent is seeking to expose. There was no actual “original sin” committed by Adam and Eve. It was a story, an allegory, brought forward by Christianity as a means of bringing the faithful into submission to the Church’s rules and requirements for admission to the kingdom of heaven after they die. The reality is we are born into this world not with original sin on our souls but, to borrow a phrase from Catholic prelate and author Matthew Fox, with “original innocence.”

We all worship One God

The Jewish calendar also derives from a system used by the later Babylonians. Even the traditional incantation bowls used by Jewish rabbis were of Babylonian origin. The Babylonian Talmud too has medical information from earlier Babylonian lore, and Babylonian astrological texts have been found to have been used by Jewish groups as well. Even the belief in one god, which carried over into Christianity and Islam, has been seen by some scholars as deriving from ancient Mesopotamia: the name of the god of the Assyrians, Ashur (Assur), means the “One,” the “Only,” the “Universal God.”

It appears, then, that Islam and Christianity worship the same One God.

Mesopotamian influence can also be detected in the origin of the Tree of Life, now the backbone of the mystical Jewish practice known as the Kabbalah. The notorious “Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil” in the Book of Genesis of the Old Testament also has its roots in the very early oral mythological teachings of humans well before the invention of writing.  The story of Ezekiel also comes out of Babylon and suggests that Ezekiel may have been involved with the esoteric mysteries of Egypt as an initiate himself. So, much of our Judeo-Christian heritage comes from pagan religions.

The “Jesus of Faith” Vs the “Jesus of History” part 3:1– Initiation and Incubation

“Say, ‘I am a child of Earth and starry Heaven; but my race is of Heaven [alone]’”

I have been sharing a perspective of the eighteen missing years of Jesus’ young adulthood from religious historian Michael Baigent’s book The Jesus Papers – Exposing the Greatest Cover-Up in History. In my last post, we explored a possible scenario that Jesus spent those years in Egypt—possibly living in a community of healers called the Therapeutae. I will continue to share Baigent’s perspective of events in Egypt that Jesus might have know about and even explored experientially.

Pyramids for Soul Travel

The Egyptians saw themselves as keepers of the balance and harmony of our universe. The Pharaoh bore the primary responsibility in this keep and the pyramids were his means of traveling to the Far-World for wisdom from the gods. Michael Baigent gives details of this travel from information gained during several pilgrimages he made to the pyramids in Egypt and other sites of historical interest.

To ALL OF US “PILGRIMS,” it is evident that the Pyramids are more than just the extravagant tombs we have been led to believe they are. Stephen Quirke states bluntly that the Pyramids, along with many other buildings that disintegrated over time, formed part of an ornate complex dedicated to the cult of the pharaoh as a divinity, adding that “they are only secondarily tombs.” The Pyramid of Djoser and other buildings in the complex at Saqqara, he explains, provide “unambiguous evidence” for their ritual use—in this case, for the Sed festival, a great festival held every thirty years or so that aimed to renew the power of the pharaoh.”

The most significant study of the cult of the pharaoh has recently been completed by Dr. Jeremy Naydler and presented in his book Shamanic Wisdom in the Pyramid Texts. He explains that the Sed festival was conducted to allow the pharaoh to bring the physical world and the Far-World into harmony, a balancing that would benefit all of Egypt. The “central rite” of the Sed festival “involved the king crossing the threshold between worlds,” with the aim of bringing himself into a “direct relationship to the normally hidden spiritual powers.” To allow this to happen, during the most secret parts of the ritual ceremony it appears that the king had “an ecstatic visionary experience.” This experience was deliberately induced by those conducting the rites, who well understood the linkage between the two worlds and the importance of the pharaoh as a point of contact between the two.

Naydler is blunt: his conclusion from his study of the Pyramid Texts is that “far from being funerary texts, [these texts] were primarily concerned with mystical experiences of a type similar to those that the living king had during the ‘secret rites’ of the Sed festival, for they can clearly be seen to belong to a genre of archetypal human experiences at the crossing point between this world and the spirit world.”

One of these texts reads: “O king, you have not departed dead, you have departed alive.” Another reads: “I have gone and returned. . . .  I go forth today in the real form of a living spirit.” Yet another text is entitled “Ascending to the sky . . . . and becoming an Akh.”

The Akh is “the shining one,” a “being of light,” and is the root of the word akhet, or “horizon.” It describes the end sought by the Ba: to convert into pure spiritual radiance. In terms of the dead, it reveals that the person after death, following a period when he is free of his body in his Ba [soul] form, eventually ascends to enter a state of transcendence and merges with the radiant Source of all. Stephen Quirke explains that “the akh is the transfigured spirit that has become one with the light.” The word used in the texts for this process is sakhu—meaning “to make [the deceased] an Akh … a being of light.”

As Baigent points out, scholars would dispute this experiential approach to texts and rites and relegate it all to “millennia of imaginative speculation” by priests who may have believed what they were writing but didn’t ascribe to the actual possibility of such occurrences  Naydler nevertheless suggests that the experiences of crossing the threshold of death while yet alive were indeed possible and real. Baigent writes:

IT IS HERE THAT I am reminded again of the unique term “ahket of Khufu” applied to the Great Pyramid of the pharaoh Khufu at Giza, which I referred to at the beginning of the chapter. Could this name, meaning “to blaze, to be radiant,” and indicating the point of entry into the Far-World on the horizon, possibly suggest that the pyramid was the place from which Khufu passed into the Far-World? And the place from which he returned?

With the responsibility of maintaining Ma’at upon him, could it be that Khufu sought answers from the spiritual beings in the realm beyond on how to ensure harmony in this world? And if he did indeed cross the threshold into the kingdom of gods, how did he do it? What specific techniques were known to the Egyptian priests who assisted Khufu and other Egyptians before and after him?

It is quite possible that Jesus himself visited the Great Pyramid of Giza (pronounced jeeza) and went through the ritual by which he initiated the process of revelation of his radiant divinity, which he revealed later on with three of his closest disciples, as the Gospels of Matthew and Mark both record. Jesus apparently crossed over the threshold between heaven and earth and visited with two great beings, Moses and Elias, with whom he had a conversation. He was “transfigured before them: and his face did shine like the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.” (Matt 17:2) How did he do this? And when and where did he initiate this process of transfiguration and revelation of his radiant divinity? Could it have been inside the Great Pyramid of Giza? Was not his mission, like the pharaohs such as Khufu, to bring balance and harmony back to the relationship between heaven and earth? Perhaps to restore harmony and balance between the planet itself and the solar system – or Solar Entity, as I prefer to call it?

Rites of Initiation

Golden plates were found in graves in Thessaly, Greece, that speak of a celebration or ritual “performance by the ‘blessed ones” that took place underground. The “blessed ones” are written about as being  “’The Holy Ones, who understand the mysteries.’ Meaning, it is evident, those who had been initiated.” One plate reads: “O fortunate and blessed one, you are a god, no longer mortal.” Another plate reads: “Say, I am a child of Earth and starry Heaven; But my race is of Heaven [alone]”–advice given to a Far-World traveler to prepare him for any query about who he was.

We cannot avoid it: we are forced to take seriously the idea of initiation in underground chambers, and of initiates sharing with the dead secret rites and knowledge. This is a strange claim for a modern person to take seriously, but we must view the ancients in their own terms: this is how they explained what happens, and there seems to have been little ambiguity or doubt involved. Simply because we find it hard to believe is no reason to think that they misunderstood what was occurring, or worse, that they made it up as part of a “pious fraud.” All the evidence at our disposal leads to the conclusion that those who passed through the initiation ceremonies felt that they had been well served. There are no reports of disgruntled initiates demanding their money back.

Perhaps it is time now to look at how the priests did it—that is, how they helped initiates actually leave their bodies and travel to the Far-World.

Incubation

There was a ritual performed in underground chambers, facilitated by Egyptian priests, called the “initiation,” which included a process of “incubation,” whereby those who wished to cross over to the Far-World and “be introduced to the divine secrets” could do so and return safely. This was performed in underground sanctuaries accessible by way of tunnels. Baigent relates it to an interesting classic story:

These initiates, as they were called, would enter, take the right-hand path—which was always recommended in the ancient texts—and be rowed along an artificial river to reach the inner sanctuary, which served as the doorway or portal into the netherworld they sought and the kingdom of the gods. To return, the initiates could pass back across the river. In the meantime, the alternative tunnel provided the priests of the site direct access to the sanctuary, where they would wait for the initiates to arrive.

It was all rather reminiscent of the visits to the underworld that classical writers had described. They began with accounts of visitors to the infernal regions being rowed across the River Styx by the silent boatman Charon. Then, after entry into the sacred kingdom, the traveler experienced, as Vergil describes it, “places of delight, to green park land, Where souls take ease amid the Blessed Groves.”!

The author actually visited this site and describes in intriguing detail features he personally saw that are found in Vergil’s Aeneid, a scene where Aeneas visits the Sibyl of Cuma and asks for directions to the underworld. Vergil’s story turns out to be more fact than fiction. Homer also wrote stories about crossing over to the underworld:

THE VERY NOTION of crossing to the realm of the dead has had a long tradition in the Greek world. The earliest report of such a journey appears in the famous book XI of Homer’s great epic The Odyssey. Odysseus, on his complicated journey back to his home after the battles of Troy, is required by a witch, Circe, to descend into Hades, where Persephone is queen, in order to seek advice from the soul of a famous but dead Theban.

As I read Baigent’s description of what was called “incubation,” it sounded very much like what we know and practice today as meditation or contemplation — or even what today is known as a “sweat lodge.”  Only this ritual was performed by priests who knew the techniques and how to administer them. The question I am interested in having answered is whether or not Jesus had a personal experience of incubation during his sojourn in Egypt—perhaps as a preparation for his three-days in the sepulcher between his alleged crucifixion and his celebrated resurrection. Baigent alludes to this possibility but leaves us to our own conclusions and speculations.

THESE MATTERS MAY seem far too arcane to have any relevance whatsoever to our story, which, after all, concerns Jesus and the source of his teachings. Yet Jesus, as we shall soon see, also took an experiential approach to his mysticism. Could men like Parmenides have transmitted ideas to the classical world of the time of Jesus? Could they have added to the fertile mix of techniques that found a center in the great city of Alexandria and a Jewish expression in the Pythagorean-influenced group of Therapeutae whom Philo described living in a community outside the city?

Practice of Dying – Near Death Experiences?

Out of body experience

Plato explains through the words of Socrates that those who are involved in following philosophy correctly “‘are practicing nothing other than dying and being dead…truly, then, those who practice philosophy aright are cultivating dying.’” The only difference is that one returns to this world. It sounds very similar to a Near Death Experience.

At the point of death, Themistius informs us, “[the soul] has the same experience as those who are being initiated into great mysteries.”

This definitive assertion can be taken as a true expression of one who had himself been through the great mysteries. This is not just an intellectual belief but something learned from participating in such a journey to the Far-World.

Themistius continues:

At first one wanders and wearily hurries to and fro, and journeys with suspicion through the dark as one uninitiated: then come all the terrors before the final initiation, shuddering, trembling, sweating, amazement: then one is struck with a marvelous light, one is received into pure regions and meadows, with voices and dances and the majesty of holy sounds and shapes: among these he who has fulfilled initiation wanders free, and released and bearing his crown joins in the divine communion, and consorts with pure and holy men.

The Healer-Priests

In 1958 evidence was uncovered among the ruins of the ancient city of Velia in Italy of healer-priests of Apollo who survived the fall of that city. One of these was the Presocratic philosopher Parmenides. The date 446 A.D. was the latest date inscribed on the stone base of a destroyed statue, indicating a time somewhere around the beginning of the Christian period. Baigent describes their ritual practice:

These healer-priests were important: one of their titles was Pholarchos—“Lord of the Lair.” This is revealing, as these priests were specialists in an initiatory technique once well known in the ancient world as the technique of incubation.

In antiquity the best way of actually making contact with divinities of the underworld was through the practice of “incubation”—of awaiting a dream or vision while sleeping, as a rule, either on or even inside the earth.”

The ritual practice of incubation involves lying down in complete stillness and silence in an underground room, or perhaps a cave, in order to have a prophetic dream or to fall into a state of consciousness that is neither waking nor sleeping. It was here in the enclosed dark spaces that the seekers might have experienced passing across to the Far-world, where they could receive a vision from the Divine, the Source of all. The god of incubation was Apollo.”

. . . . The sacred journey was undertaken for healing or for a revelatory experience. These healer-priests of Apollo were experts in incubation and, as Kingsley explains, “used incantations to enter other states of consciousness.”

We can see here that the practices of ancient Greece, using such sites as found at Baia or the deep caves or underground sites that must have existed in Velia, were not so different from the uses made of the crypts beneath the temples in ancient Egypt. Such dark secluded places were chosen by seekers who, after dutiful preparation and appropriate ritual and incantation, lay in the stillness and entered another state of consciousness. We are left with little alternative but to seriously consider that they did indeed leave their bodies in their Ba form (according to the Egyptians) or in their psyche, or soul (according to the Greeks), and travel to the Far-World.

We can also see that by the time of Jesus the two traditions were drawing ever closer together. In fact, during the Greek and Roman domination of their country, the Egyptians despaired of their secrets surviving; the first-or second-century A.D. Hermetic text the Asclepius laments:

“A time will come when it will appear that the Egyptians paid respect to divinity with faithful mind and painstaking reverence to no purpose. All their holy worship will be disappointed and perish without effect, for divinity will return from earth to heaven, and Egypt will be abandoned…. When foreigners occupy the land … a prohibition under penalty prescribed by law (so-called) will be enacted against reverence, fidelity and divine worship. Then this most holy land, seat of shrines and temples, will be filled completely with tombs and corpses…. Only words cut in stone will survive to tell your faithful works.”

And so did it come to pass: Egypt became a land of darkness and stone-engraved mystery simultaneously with the rise of Christianity.  This ended the “First Sacred School” initiated by Abraham and cleared the way for the “Second Sacred School” initiated by Jesus.  I will leave it there for now. On Human Relations, . . . . . part 6: The Path of Romantic Love

My Chorale PicAn intimate, romantic, and sexual relationship with another human being, far from distracting one from spiritual attainment, can open a fast-track path to spiritual transformation: the path of romantic love.

This path is cluttered with signposts bearing moral Christian doctrines that warn of a sinful destination for those who seek erotic pleasure in natural sex drives that were designed to bring couples into a state of ecstatic union, along with the function of propagating the human species — sex solely for gratification not withstanding. The church is solely responsible for the degradation of sex from sacrament to sin in human relations, using Jesus, the celibate divine redeemer, and Mary Magdalene, the human “sinful prostitute,” as models upon which to base its thwarted and therefore false premise.

I’m in my second reading of Cynthia Bourgeault’s profoundly insightful and thought-provoking, if not controversial, rendering of  “The Meaning of MARY MAGDALENE – DISCOVERING THE WOMAN AT THE HEART OF CHRISTIANITY.”

This is unequivocally the most powerful book I have yet read on the story of Mary Magdalene and her role in the life and ministry of Jesus. The author, an Episcopal priest, literally plumbs the depth of my soul and awakens dreams of a “perfect world,” almost to the point of disturbing my default inner peace by arousing once again that painfully familiar longing for a seemingly unattainable state of “singleness” as a whole human being — ironically, a singleness that can only be obtained, according to her insight and perspective, in the state of holy matrimony. Cynthia’s Jesus came to “reclaim the path of romantic love” and to uplift marriage between a man and a woman to its original state of “one flesh” that no man can “put asunder”– and he walked his talk. He was not celibate by any connotation of that word. Nor did he recommend celibacy as the higher path to spiritual transformation. His was a life fully “enfleshed” as a whole human being, and that’s what made him such a powerful magnet and lightning rod. The people loved him for his authenticity. The governing religious leaders of that time hated him for the same reason.  Actually, in their gross darkness, they simply did not comprehend his light, and it frightened them and threatened their self-serving authority.

This book has a Voice. One that speaks from out of the ancient past, spanning time from the “beginning”– the Edenic origins of Man and Woman — up to and including the life, public ministry and death of Jesus the Nazarene, only not the Jesus introduced to us when we were children and foisted upon the Christian world since the fourth century Council of Nicea.  Cynthia’s Jesus is a whole human being who “emptied” himself fully of both his humanity and his divinity, leaving no part of his soul and body unused in service to his heavenly Father and to Humankind. And it was his intimate relationship with Mary Magdalene to which Cynthia attributes the fulfillment of his mission and purpose for incarnating on the planet when he did. I should say the fulfillment of their shared mission and purpose.

That said, I don’t think that I can do Cynthia’s book justice in a blog-long book review. So, with the thought in mind that my readers may be inspired to read Cynthia’s book to fully enjoy her viewpoint on these timely issues, I will simply share a few passages from her book that moved my soul to the point of shouting “YES! That rings so true!” I will share and comment on them as they come up in my second reading. Enjoy and be blessed.

I will start at the beginning of Chapter 7, “RECLAIMING THE PATH OF ROMANTIC LOVE,” just to give you a sense of the tone of Cynthia’s voice, along with the context in which she writes. Here she speaks to the issue of celibacy in a priesthood supposedly modeled after Jesus and his celibate apostles — or were they?

NEARLY TWENTY YEARS ago, long before The Da Vinci Code uproar broke, I was serving as parish priest in a small Episcopal congregation in Colorado. When the gospel appointed for one particular Sunday in August was Luke’s account of that anonymous “sinful” woman with her alabaster jar, I decided to take the risk of breaking open some of the insights that even back then were beginning to emerge from a growing spate of Mary Magdalene studies. My parishioners were a bright and intellectually curious bunch, so why not? During my sermon, I gently presented Margaret Starbird’s assertion (in her book The Woman with the Alabaster Jar, named after this very gospel passage) that the anointing of Jesus’s hands and feet described in the text was not simply a random act by a penitent woman, but an exquisitely symbolic ritual enacted between two lovers about to be separated.

The fire storm was predictable.

I had tried to pave the way as carefully as I could. My point in raising those issues, as I made clear both in the sermon itself and in the discussion that boiled over afterward, was not to argue the case one way or another, but rather to get at some of the attitudes underlying the way we Christians do theology — and more important the way we do love. “How do you feel about the possibility that Jesus had a human beloved?” I asked these parishioners. “Does it make you feel uncomfortable? Why?”

The responses were pretty much what I expected: “But if Jesus had sexual relations with a woman, he couldn’t be sinless.” “If he loved one in particular, he couldn’t love us all impartially.” “How could he be the son of God unless he gave himself completely to God?” The overwhelming consensus was that if Jesus had known erotic love, he could not possibly have also been the full embodiment of divine love. It would somehow disqualify him as the divine redeemer.

I could hardly blame the congregation for feeling that way.

After nearly two millennia of reinforcement, these assumptions have become so much of the landscape of Christianity that they appear to be part of the seamless structure of revealed truth. But in fact, assumptions are what they really are — not core tenets of the faith, not anything that Jesus himself taught, but superimpositions of a male, celibate, priestly theology which for nearly two thousand years has been the only game in town.

The complicated history of how this situation came to be could fill a book in itself (and in fact has several times over). The short version is basically this: during those first four centuries of Christian life, as leadership moved from a charismatic eldership model to the threefold sacramental ministry we know today (bishops, priests, and deacons), part and parcel of this evolution was an increasing tendency to view both Christ and his apostles through the prototype of celibate priesthood. This is of course a flagrant anachronism in light of the unambiguous scriptural references to Peter’s mother-in-law (Matthew 8:14) and the only slightly more ambiguous allusions in Luke to the other disciples’ “companions.?”

But counterbalancing the testimony of the gospels themselves was a growing discomfort with conjugal intimacy, a discomfort whose roots probably lie in the extreme Essene asceticism out of which Jesus himself most likely emerged (we will be exploring this topic in greater detail in the following chapter). Beginning as early as Paul, this unease was magnified in each succeeding generation by a chorus of Christianity’s most influential thinkers including Marcion, Tatian, Jerome, and Augustine. The consensus grew stronger and stronger that sex and the sacraments simply didn’t mix. By the fourth century edicts were in place forbidding married priests to have conjugal relations with their wives. Not long thereafter married priesthood itself dropped astern in Western Christendom, and celibacy became the entrance requirement for admission to the power structure of the church.

It gives one a bit of a start to realize that for the better part of two millennia, Christian theology has been written, shaped, formulated, and handed down almost exclusively by celibates talking to other celibates. In that respect, it is extraordinarily monolithic. And from this exclusively celibate template emerges the only image of Christ our tradition has allowed us to entertain: of a celibate renunciate whose “sinless” purity would necessarily entail sexual abstinence.

At the age of twenty-one, this very requirement barred my own entrance into the Roman Catholic priesthood after seven years of seminary life, during which I tried in vain to suppress my body’s natural erotic urges and my soul’s longing for a feminine soul mate.  Cynthia goes right to the heart of the highly emotionally charged premise that in addition to all the roles attributed to Mary Magdalene — apostle, visionary, healer — “there is still one remaining to her, which may just be the most important of them all: soul mate.”

Were Jesus and Mary Magdalene lovers? Were they secretly married? That, of course, is the claim laid out in  The Da Vinci Code and a number of other books and documentaries and which the church angrily refutes.

The question would never have a fair hearing in Christian circles, she goes on to say, where the “mote” has not yet been cast out of our own eyes while we dare to pass judgement on those who entertain a different view from our own.

It is one thing to argue the case for reclaiming Mary Magdalene as apostle and wisdom-bearer, purveyor of a sorely needed feminine presence in the church; it is quite another to tie this claim to the theologically taboo subject of a romantic involvement with Jesus. Two-thousand years of dogma and tradition have left the field so thoroughly land-mined with negative assumptions and stereotypes that it is virtually impossible to see anything other than red, like my congregation that morning. The question will inevitably be heard as an attack on Jesus and as an act of sabotage upon the Christian faith itself.

After two-thousand years of programming that celibacy is the highest Christian way when compared to the second-rate path of committed spousal love, “it is hardly surprising that our Western anthropology of human sexuality is abysmal.”

In the secular version relentlessly foisted upon us by contemporary culture, it’s all about pleasure, performance, gratification. In the bedroom of the faithful, it’s still all too often about duty and shame: a begrudging debt to future generations which, even when carefully managed, is still tainted with carnal sin. Mention “erotic love” and people will immediately hear “sex,” then immediately thereafter, “dirty.” The idea that there could be anything holy about this kind of love is too alien to even consider. That’s simply the way our ears have been trained to hear it; we are all children of a cultural stream whose vision of human love  has been shaped by the shadow side of celibate spirituality.

From the gutter, the view of the gossip and speculation around Mary Magdalene and Jesus in various studies is less than holy and rather “scandalmongering,” Cynthia writes.

We are really presented with only four options:

1. That Mary Magdalene was Jesus’s mistress;

2. That theirs was a politically arranged marriage, strictly for dynastic purposes;

3. That they were sexual consorts in some Gnostic Mystery religion, ritually reenacting the sacred hieros gamos, or union of the opposites;

4. That the whole story is purely archetypal, a great Sophianic myth depicting the integration of the masculine and feminine within the human soul.”

With that, I will leave you to ponder these options for yourself and return in two weeks to compare your choice of options to Cynthia’s in my next post as we continue to explore romantic human love as a path to spiritual transformation. I will present four “propositions” or “myths”– all “rooted in the soil of celibate spirituality — that together have subtly sabotaged our ability to see romantic love as an authentic path of spiritual transformation.” Until my next post, then . . .

With the recent church shooting  in Charleston, South Carolina by a twenty-one-year-old man that abruptly ended nine lives, my thoughts turn to questioning the home life of this deeply troubled and misguided young man and the culture of racial prejudice into which he was born.

We’ve been considering The Law of Balance in this series on Human Relations. Here’s a case where that law has long been ignored in this young man’s family life, but more so in his social environment. Violence has its roots in the family unit and in our culture of hate and prejudice, particularly here in the South. Gun control is not where we need to go to fix this problem, and jailing or executing the shooter brings no healing to this wounded human being.  Only compassion and understanding will begin to heal him and eradicate prejudice and hate from our culture. He needs to be taken in by society and bathed in love, not shut out and disposed of by our penal system. That system needs a complete re-thinking and re-ordering. The church members were as quick to forgive this young man as they were open to welcome him into their congregation. That’s a huge step toward healing, both the traumatized congregation and the young man. That attitude needs to be reflected in society as a whole and somehow in our penal system.

In the previous post, I ended the excerpt from Lao Russell’s book, GOD WILL WORK WITH YOU BUT NOT FOR YOU, with this brief but poignant paragraph:

Man has always crucified love on the cross of his own self-glory by the killing of men; and women have always wept at the foot of the cross, as they wept when men crucified the Nazarene while all but one of His disciples who professed to love Him, deserted Him.

I then closed my post with thoughts that arose from reading what Lao had to say here concerning the crucified Nazarene, offering that there were actually three of His disciples who stood at the foot of the cross: Mary Magdalene, his wife and soul mate, his mother Mary, and John the Beloved with whom Jesus endowed His mantle of authority. I then suggested that Jesus and Mary Magdalene had fulfilled their mission and purpose on earth by restoring the union between Man and Woman, a union that had been fragmented since Adam blamed Eve for their disobedience. That failure on the part of Adam to accept responsibility for his action but rather place all the blame on Eve drove a wedge between them. It also separated them from the Creator, but only in consciousness and awareness.

With this severance of the unity between these two earthly partners in Creation and between Man and his Creator, the world as we knew it in the beginning began to change, as did our perception of the world. It became a hostile place to live where survival and the killing of animals and of one another became the way of existence on the planet. Man became the hunter and gatherer, as well as protector of his territory, and woman became the home maker. Love was lost in our fall from grace as fear darkened our hearts and clouded our vision. And that is how it has remained to this very day.

Lao continues to share her perspectives and understanding—which some of my readers may find antiquated. This was written, after all, in 1955.  Much has changed in our consciousness since then. I should hope so anyway.

All of this is quite natural. It could hardly be otherwise, for man in his unfolding (or evolving) remembered the fighter spirit of his primate days of taking, while not realizing that the woman spirit of giving was gradually awakening in him a keener desire for mental mating and the spiritual unity of the equal Father-Motherhood of balanced mating. The hardest lesson which man must learn during the long ages of his journey is that God made man and woman equal with one another in order that they should manifest divided love by equal interchange in their givings and regivings. God’s whole purpose for dividing His spiritual Self into pairs of fathers and mothers is to dramatize His Love nature by the romance of equal and opposite interchange of love. The romance of awakening love is far greater than either its mental or physical interchange. Every expression of mating is empty without the romance of love itself. Romance is love-awareness without which there can be no complete happiness in any mating.

The Cosmic drama of Creation is a romance which all mankind is perpetually transforming to comedy and tragedy as it eternally seeks romance without knowing the path which leads to it. Through the romance of balanced interchanging of love between fathers and mothers they find unity which alone gives to them the ecstasy of the divine nature of God.

Physical sex interchange has been first in the desires of mass-man. Mental sex interchange is rare, while romance starves in a world which would give all else for just one hour of it. That is the lesson of life which all must learn who search for the peace and happiness which will alone bring rest from world tensions. The world has never learned it because the senses of man have never let him know the real meaning of either love or romance.

The world of divided humans must some day know that God’s divided universe is an electrically sex-divided dramatization of CAUSE and EFFECT. The CAUSE is Mind-desire for expressing static idea through intechanging motion. The EFFECT is what happens because of that division and the necessity of interchanging. CAUSE is, therefore, one—and EFFECT is always two. The lesson of life is to learn how to so balance the interchanging between the two halves of every effect that all EFFECT is completely canceled out in complete sexlessness by their balanced unity.

God’s motive as Master-Playwright of His Cosmic drama is the love urge of the mating idea expressed physically by the uniting of bodies to void the physical tensions of the sex urge by balancing them, and thus reproduce other bodies. It is also for the purpose of expressing the love urge in its mental and spiritual expression by eliminating the mental tensions of separateness. This is accomplished by uniting spiritual mates for creating spiritual idea.

A mental sex relation is for the purpose of creating idea, while the physical sex relation is for the purpose of creating body forms of mentally conceived ideas.

That is why any woman and any man who have harmonious spiritual relations with each other, such as a mother and son, or good friends, or business partners, can multiply power in each other very much more. than any two men, or any two women could possibly do.

That is why any organization which consists solely of men, whether it be an industry, a club, or the cabinet of the President of the United States, or ‘of other organizations composed of women only, necessarily creates unbalanced structures in which there can never be complete unity.

That is why this man-made world is so badly unbalanced and disunited. Its male qualities are so preponderant that it has made a civilization which operates like a flywheel whose shaft is badly off–center. A woman-made world would be just as unbalanced. Its preponderance of female qualities would make it equally disunited.

If you look into the life history of any great man you will find a woman in it who had a tremendous influence upon the creative powers which accounted for his greatness. It may be more than one woman, such as his mother, and his wife, or sweetheart, or dearly loved friend. No matter who that woman, or those women were, the basis of their interchange with him must first be love mentally
expressed. A spiritual union between any man and woman is of ten-thousand times more value than love physically expressed without the spiritual.

The romance is in the awakening of love in one another, which is not a one-time event when our hormones are beginning to kick in. It’s has to be an ongoing event.  

Love is not objective, nor can it be possessed. The woman awakens love in the man, and the man awakens love in the woman. The romance of it is in the awakening, not in the consummation. It is the awakened ability to love which counts, and not the acquisition of the object which has awakened it, nor in any physical contact whatsoever. A woman may not even be aware that she is deeply loved, and the man who loves may never even exchange a word with her. Where love is spiritual it uplifts, exalts, enriches and ennobles.

Where sex is purely physical it debases and defiles. Millions have ruined themselves through physical sex expression which was not spiritually balanced. The roué [debauched person] is despised where the parent is honored. Whole civilizations have been utterly destroyed by the sex debauchery of incest and promiscuity. Wherever spiritual sex-mating is preponderant over the physical there is then the beauty and glory of the power which men and women can alone
know who have that unity which comes to those “whom God hath joined together.”

Any man and woman who are thus spiritually and physically balanced multiply their unified power by eight—not two. Two separate, disunited potentials are only two, but when two potentials act as one their power multi-plies in the ratio of the cube. In other words, when two completely united, balanced mates act as one they do not add their two powers together to equal two, they multiply
them in the ratio of gravitation mathematics, which are three dimensional.

There is no lesson so hard to learn, or of such great import, as the long lesson of learning how to interchange all spiritual and physical divisions of effect equally in order to unify them, and thus make two unbalanced conditions become one. A balanced life, home, business, community, nation or world of nations is possible only by learning that great lesson by the hard way of experience until it is put into practice.

An approximation of balance will not suffice for complete happiness. A man who still insists upon being “master in his own home,” cannot have a happy home, even though he provides for his family generously and is a model husband in every other respect. With such a condition contentment is possible but romance is utterly stifled. A residue of unbalance still remains which makes it impossible to cancel out all actions and reactions by balancing them as a businessman balances his books constantly. A business could not succeed if a daily deficit made it impossible to balance its books, nor can a family succeed in being all that a family should where a constant tension exists which cannot be utterly voided.

The wife would try to assure herself she was happy by seeing the good points in her husband. Something would constantly be happening which would not happen if the home was a balanced one. A daughter might marry against her better judgment because of the tension which could not be eliminated, or a son might leave home where he otherwise would not. Unity cannot exist where tensions hold two apart. They will always be two until residual tensions are balanced. The two will then be ONE.

In countries where their women are forced to accept infidelities as a matter of course there can never be the happy home life enjoyed by those nations where infidelities are the exception and not the rule. Under such conditions unity is utterly impossible, because romance is impossible.

The Essenes, “Children of the Light,” Part 3:The Teacher

The Teacher’s Message

If you can forgive completely, the past disappears for you. If you forgive completely, you don ‘t need to worry about the future either; you can function as fully aware beings, fully conscious beings, working and moving in the moment and focusing the energies of the Divine Presence. (Excerpted from The Essenes – Children of the Light.)

Tony's picture 2 from PeggyI have been writing about the Essenes  and how they provided “The Teacher” with a core circle of trusted friends, as well as a vibrational hedge for his ministry. His twelve apostles and disciples were not all a part of that core. Only a few, such as his brother James, John the Beloved, his mother Mary,  Mary Magdalene, and Joseph of Arimathea.  Those who comprised his core and hedge lived in the Essene communities near the banks of the Dead Sea. Their purpose centered in living out of love, compassion and understanding. Their mission was about spreading The Teacher’s message of love among the people of the extended Jewish community. Few, however, had ears to hear and eyes to see. 

On Time and Timelessness

The Essenes BkIn this book, pictured here, we are given a portrayal of  the Master Jesus and the essence of his message through a man named Daniel who lived in the Qumran Community at the time of the Teacher’s ministry. During a past life regression interview with Daniel through Stuart conducted by Joanna, here is what Daniel had to say about the Teacher’s personal atmosphere. Joanna had asked him about grace. 

Daniel: Grace is a gift of love and healing from the highest level. God going the extra mile to meet us upon the road of life. We considered that we were living in a time of Grace, and we felt that this Grace centered around Jesus. He was the bringer of our Grace because many cosmic energies focused around him, and made possible breakthroughs in consciousness, and a transformation in the lives of those who came into his presence.

Some ones, who had sight upon very high levels, told me that when they looked at Jesus they did not see only his aura, they saw this vast vortex of cosmic energy whirling around him. They said it was like the layers of an onion, an infinite number of transparent layers of energy moving out and out into the universe. So that he was the center of all things, the center not only of our drama but the whole drama of the planet. He was the center of all things, and forces were gathered around him that made many things possible. Others who were attuned to the higher reaches of the angelic realm said that around Jesus they sensed the presence of very high angels.

He was the bringer of Grace – who else could be a focus for all these energies? And because all these energies were focused together, we could move through our experience faster. It quickened everything. You could not be anywhere near him and not move more quickly along your path.

Joanna: Tell me more about this vortex of energy surrounding Jesus.

Daniel: We were aware that a whole vortex of cosmic energy revolved around Jesus and that anyone who encountered him stepped into that vortex. That was  really the miracle for us. Not that he did this or that remarkable healing, but that his whole being was a focus of cosmic energy, and thus he could bring profound changes into the lives of all those he met who could accept these energies.

As his work flowered he became more a timeless being, talking about timeless things which would be relevant in any age. Time did not touch him, he escaped from time and that was part of his work and part of his gift. But we knew that in the end time might dilute and distort the message he came to bring. Once the Teacher is no longer physically present, the Teaching may become changed and weakened. What needs to go forward is the essential message that Jesus was trying to convey: unconditional love working through the heart, and the surrendering of the will to the Divine Presence within.

The more one surrenders one’s will to the Divine Presence, the more one merges with that Presence which is within every human being, the more the path opens and the way becomes clear and straight. Then one can go forward and rise in consciousness and ascend into new frequencies of being. All of this was what Jesus was trying to teach his disciples and the groups around him. He was trying to teach this but
many did not want to hear this message, and would much rather have rigid structures. The inner truth is of the Spirit and lives, and anything which is of the letter has its day, flowers and is gone.

Remember always that Jesus lived in a difficult and troubled time. Many people were frightened, and in their fear they clung to the comforting thought of a strong Father who would protect them. They preferred a strong external perception of Deity, a strong Father rather than the Divine Presence within. They saw the within as weak, and the external forces as strong and threatening. Jesus came to show them how strong the Divine Presence could be. How it could burn like a great Light within him and illumine the lives of all those around him, but many in their fear were not able to see this.

He was offering them a chance to step out of the child state and become fully adult in the spiritual sense, but this step was too much for them. They wished to be the powerless children of a loving Father for a little while longer. You know, he never blamed them for that. He used to say that we should have faith in the ability of every human being to awaken at exactly the right time, like a flower which opens in its due season. If we choose to awaken and become spiritually adult we can become creators with God, but many were not ready for that. They wished to slumber a little longer, to be the passive children of creation, walking hand in hand with the Father but unwilling to share in Divine knowledge and Divine power.

Joanna: And the vortex of energy around Jesus helped people to awaken at the right time?

Daniel: Yes. Because of all the vortex of power around Jesus he was able to pull people out of an obsession with the past and into the moment. When they were in his presence, the past disappeared. They realized that nothing was important but the moment, and that they were free to act within that moment.

This was one of the gifts Jesus brought for many ones, the ability to focus and act in the present in a way they had never experienced before he came. If you can forgive completely the past disappears for you. If you forgive completely you don ‘t need to worry about the future either, you can function as fully aware beings, fully conscious beings, working and moving in the moment and focusing the energies of the Divine Presence.

Nothing else is important; nothing else will exist for you. That is why Jesus excited so many people. They could feel themselves being pulled out of time and into timelessness, out of the past into the everlasting present which is the only place in which you have power. The past and the future, if you are entangled with guilt or with worries and anxieties, rob you of your power. Only the present gives you power, and forgiveness is the key to ensuring you stay within that focus, expanding your awareness and living fully within the moment. This is living as God intended. This is joy. This is freedom – and this is what Jesus taught. This is the most wonderful gift which he gave to us.

We feel that this section was one of Daniel’s greatest gifts, too. It made us see the work of Jesus in a totally new light, and we realized that it is as much needed today as when he taught this wisdom two thousand years ago. Somehow in these words of Daniel all the dead weight of centuries of dogma and doctrine fell away, and the message – and the gift – of Jesus shone through.

Tony Pics for SA BookAre we ascending yet? I believe we are. At least the planet appears to be shifting to a higher frequency, and our bodies are very much a part of the planet, so they would also be ascending along with it. Is this an automatic process happening to us, or do we have any part to play in facilitating the process? I believe that both things are happening. Our bodies are being uplifted to a higher frequency and we have a part to play in the process—that is if we wish to take our bodies with us, which may well be possible one day, but not yet. Presently, we can only take our spiritual bodies with their subtle substance with us when we make our transition in what is called death.

The question “Are we ascending?” begs some clarification.The answer would depend on who we are—or rather who we think we are. If by “we” we are referring to the incarnate beings we are in the spiritual sense, then I think there is a consensus among the awakened majority of us that the beings we are already live at a  higher level than the physical and, therefore, do not need to ascend. As for our physical bodies and outer being which includes our human consciousness, that all needs to ascend to a higher vibrational frequency in order to continue its existence on a planet whose vibrational frequency is shifting to a higher vibration. And the only way that can happen is by a power emanating from within and permeating every tissue cell of our bodies.

It is the expression of a higher frequency power through body, mind and heart of each individual that will lever the physical body up to a higher frequency. This is also true for the collective Body of Humanity. In this case, a critical mass is needed to provide that vibrational leverage. 

In the Book of Revelation there is mention of a critical mass of a hundred and forty and four thousand standing on Mount Sion with a Lamb. This could be a vibrational value rather than a quantity of warm bodies of “believers.” We know, for instance, that groups of people have meditated together and impacted world events, such as crime and weather patterns. Group chanting and toning has also been used in this way. It’s the quality of love radiation rather than quantity that matters.

LET LOVE DO THE WORK

In Biblical symbolism, the Lamb represents Jesus the Christ, the Redeemer of fallen man. Religious interpretations and creeds aside, what Jesus stood for, his personal mission and purpose for incarnating, was love. His expression through his human form was that of the highest frequency of love. His reference on every turn was to his heavenly Father. “The works that I do, I do not of myself, but the Father within me, he doeth the works.” His message was that of love. “If you love me, do as I command. Love one another as I have love you” and “Love your enemies; do good to those that hate you.” And, of course, there’s the first and second Great Commandments:

“Thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all of thy heart and all of thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength.” And the second: “Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” (Mark 12:30)

The “Father within” is love. Here is what the author of Revelation, John the Beloved, wrote about the vision he was having:

And I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred and forty and four thousand, having his Father’s name written in their foreheads.” (Rev. 14:1)

We lead forth with the thoughts in our foreheads in everything we undertake to do. They are written as intentions in our fore brains. Our creative energies follow our thoughts to manifest those thought forms at lower frequencies so that we may see and enjoy them at the physical level.

Although we are told by health authors that we are what we eat, that isn’t the whole truth. We are also what we think and express. James Allen writes about this in his little book As A Man Thinketh.

The aphorism, “As a man thinketh in his heart so is he,” not only embraces the whole of a man’s being, but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life. A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.

Well, that’s not all a Man is, is it? Man is a Human Being, a Being incarnate in human form. This aphorism indicates that a man thinks in his heart, not his mind. This is so, as we now know there are brain cells in the heart which communicate with brain cells in the brain. The Master Jesus apparently knew of this connection between heart and mind when he said “Out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” 

THE HEART-BRAIN CONNECTION

With this knowledge of the heart-brain connection, it is easy to understand how love in our hearts can raise the vibrational frequency of the cells in our bodies. It doesn’t take much change in vibration upward—as little as half a pitch—to make the body impervious to disease. Just a little more and the body will levitate. Just a bit more and the body cells will vibrate at the speed of love, which is light. And just a little more than the speed of light, the body will shift levels, become completely invisible to third-dimensional perception. So, you see, we are not very far from the fourth dimension vibrationally speaking. After we ascend to the fourth dimension, then ascension on upward into the fifth dimension, or density as some would have it, and further would be possible. Man was created on the sixth day in Genesis. Our Home, then, is at the level of the sixth heaven, just a little lower than the angels’ abode in God’s seventh heaven. There’s a Biblical reference to this in the Book of Psalms.

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him? For thou hast made him a little lower than the angel, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. (Psalm 8:3-5)

There have been so many reminders of our place in the Divine Design and Cosmology. These Biblical passages have always intrigued me and drawn me to them in meditation. This one is one of my favorite.

The earth is the LORD’S, and the fullness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? He that hath clean hands and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.This is the generation of them that seek him, that seek thy face, O Jacob.

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. Lift up your heads, O ye gates; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.  Selah.

[The “LORD of host” could be the Lord Budha, or the Lord Krishna, or any one of several deities and ascended masters in the many cultures of the world. Being brought up in Western civilization, I more naturally use Biblical references of the Christian culture. Readers are free to reference their own cultural beliefs and sacred scriptures. THE PHYSIOLOGY OF ASCENSION

The body goes in the direction of the heart’s response. When the heart is open upward in utter abandon and perfect love response to the Lord of Love, and the head is lifted up with the mind focused in the highest image one may have of the Lord of Love, “the King of glory,” the body cells begin to vibrate at a higher frequency in resonance with the frequency of Love. Love can then come into the heart. “And the King of glory shall come in.” The heart sends a message to the brain, which sends a message to the hypothalamus, which in turn sends messages via hormone precursors to the seven endocrine glands, which are the “seven seals” of the book of life. According to the author of Revelation, only the Lamb can open the seven seals of the book of life. The Lamb is Love.

The vibration of Love moving in and through the heart opens the vibrational gateways—“ye gates and everlasting doors”—of the seven endocrine glands releasing powerful hormones that go forth into the body and raise the frequency of the cells. In an instant, the body begins to rise up off the ground in ecstatic fusion with the God Being incarnate. The cycle of ascension is thus initiated. The angel takes his or her body-temple up to the next level.

From my own personal experience, this is the way it works. There are no techniques, sound or otherwise, that can initiate this process. Harmonic sound can attune energy and subtle substance and facilitate its movement through the chakra and endocrine centers. As I mentioned at the start, I find that the F# Major chord as played in the clip does move energy upward in an ascending spiral. The Father within, however, “He doeth the works.” Love God with all.

“Sonic Geometry” and the . . . . “Music of the Spheres”

Tony Pics for SA BookThis is a fascinating video, especially for the mathematicians and musicians among us, as well as those of us who know  Sacred Geometry. For the mathematician, the presentation delves into numbers and numerical ratios that form the basis for structure and shaping of life forms in our world and throughout the Universe. For the musician, it presents the geometrical basis for the Pythagorean determination of note frequency values and the musical scale used here in the West. For those knowledgeable of Sacred Geometry, you’ll find nothing new here but you may delight in the clarity and simplicity of the presentation of the profound design behind all of Creation. For the rest of us who are not mathematically, geometrically, or musically inclined, we will find the video full of interesting and thought-provoking historical facts and developments that have led to consciousness evolution and our simple enjoyment of the beauty of form in the Natural world, and of music itself. 

As a musician, I must say that I came away from viewing this video with a deep sense of sadness and disappointment over the changes made to the note frequencies in our modern day musical scale which is based on A 440 rather than on the ancient and more natural A 432, as you will see in the video. I don’t know exactly what to make of it, as all the beautiful music of the Masters we enjoy so much today is written for instruments tuned to an A 440 based scale. So, I don’t know what we’ve been missing out on; perhaps ecstatic sounds and harmonies infinitely more beautiful, uplifting and transforming than even Handel’s Alleluia Chorus. I’ve heard piano music played on a piano that was tuned according to “just tuning,” which is based on natural harmonics as opposed to contrived “even tuning.”  The music seemed to rise to infinite heights and plunge to bottomless depth. What I mostly fear is that the masses are once again being manipulated and kept imprisoned by those who seek to limit the evolution of human consciousness for political power and control purposes. Why did the “powers that be” back then find it so necessary to change these frequency values used to create our music? And why by 8 hertz, the difference between 432 and 440?

Just for example, take the ancient Solfaggio frequencies of a six-notes scale (ut, re, me, fa, sol, la) used in ancient chants that put people in an ecstatic state of communion with God, rendering the priesthood unnecessary and more of an impediment to the realization of the literal meaning and purpose of religion (which means to bind hack to, in this instance to God) than a facilitation. They were banned by the Catholic Church and forbidden to be used. Fortunately, they have been re-discovered and returned to use in sacred sound healing schools and by alternative healthcare practitioners. I use them in my sound healing work. Their overtones and undertones have no top or bottom. In other words, they are not boxed in as though they existed independent of a larger range of frequencies, like the modern musical scale suggests. There’s no “do” (or in this case “ut”) at the end of the scale to close it off to further expansion into the inaudible range of frequencies, so as to produce a sense that one has arrived at the end of the music. There’s no end to the music of the Salfaggio frequencies. They’re open ended.

Don’t get me wrong or misinterpret my implications here. Classical and even some modern music can warm the heart and bring peace and solitude to one’s soul and inner terrain, even bring one to a state of ecstasy — or perhaps mesmerize and lull one into an oblivious state of utter tranquility and receptivity to subliminal encoded suggestions. Don’t think it isn’t done in elevators and shipping malls and via the music played in the background of TV commercials. But does it facilitate real transformation and ascension of consciousness? Can it lift one’s spirit to ecstatic heights of union with God? Possibly. Handel was said to have exclaimed “I have seen the face of God!” upon completing his Alleluia Chorus. But did it change his life here on earth? To see God is not necessarily to know God. So many of the great classical composers left us heavenly music while their lives were less than heavenly and harmonious. Their music rather seemed to have driven some of them mad, as did art for some artists, like Dutch painter Vincent Van Gogh, whom Kirk Douglas portrayed so dramatically in Lust for Life.    

I had a dream many years ago when I began to explore sacred sound as a healing modality. And in this dream I heard a chord that ascended and descended in ranges of frequency to infinity. It had no beginning and no end but encompassed both earth and heaven as a connecting chord — perhaps the mythical and mystical “Lost Chord.”  I head that sound again many years later during a workshop intensive I was presenting in Attunement with Sacred Sound at a retreat center in Corona, California. We were combining sacred harmonies with sacred energy, using sound as a carrier wave for spirit. Apparently the sacred energy of love took the harmonies we were toning and lifted them up to their natural tones and overtones to carry it upward and outward for world healing. Heaven and earth were definitely connected by the sound wave of harmony we were generating. It was as though we had generated a tangible and malleable substance — what we know of a “pneumaplasm” in the Attunement Field — fine enough for the spirit of Love to move through and flow down out of heaven into the earth . . . and I now begin to see, even as I write these words, that perhaps this is what has been taken away by mind-oriented and manipulative man by changes made to the ancient musical scale based on A 432. Just perhaps. I would love to see the restoration of the original tone frequencies based on Sacred Geometry. It was encouraging to hear that a movement is underway among musicians to tune guitars, flutes and other instruments to A 432.

Q. Did Jesus know all things? I mean by that, did He have omniscience?

A. Yes, He did have omniscience. He was undoubtedly the only man who had known complete Cosmic Consciousness. 

Q. Can a cosmic conscious man see Jesus as a person?

A. No one has ever seen the Person of Jesus-or Beethoven-or you. The body alone can be seen and the Person alone can be known.

Q. Are Jesus and God the same?

A. Yes, they are One-and so are you One with God when you know that you are.

Q. What is the Soul?

A. Soul is the desire force in Mind, the will to extend desire from the Light to manifest the Light
in form.

Q. How does desire manifest itself?

A. Without desire, the seed would not germinate into form. The Soul centers the seed in the pattern of desire to express form. The seed records the pattern of the body as it changes throughout eternity. The
record changes according to the desire of the Soul-will to become a different body. 

Q. Could you give an example?

A. Yes. The pattern of a tree in Maine where the winds blow hard is recorded in the seed of that tree. The same ruggedness of pattern will be recorded in the seed and repeated as the same kind of tree when the seed again unfolds. 

Q. Your statement that trees have Souls as well as human beings is rather extraordinary. Would you explain it further?

A. The Soul is universal in all things. It does not belong to man alone. God is Light. The Soul is DESIRE in the Light. It might also be termed the WILL.

Q. How does animal life differ from vegetable and mineral life?

A. What you call animal life is not rooted to earth. It has entirely different bodies which must interchange in order to continue. The vegetable kingdom is rooted to earth. The mineral kingdom is the earth itself.

All of these function alike. They all begin and end in the same way. 

Q. What are their relations to each other? Which comes first?

A. The mineral kingdom comes first-the planet is all mineral until sufficiently cooled by the coming of water. Interchange between water and minerals begets the vegetable kingdom.

Interchange between the vegetable and mineral kingdoms begets the animal kingdom. Each of these three depends upon each other or survival. Each is an extension of the other. 

I marvel at the depth and height of Russell’s understanding. A man who truly tapped the secrets of the universe and articulated the simple truth of it all.

I will end this series at this point to explore some of the profound perspectives and transcendent vision of Hugh Malafry as shared in his landmark and timely novel The Light at Lindisfarne. So, until next post,

Tony's picture 2 from PeggyWe’ve been sharing excerpts from the chapter “Questions Answered” in Walter Russell’s 1948 book, THE MESSAGE OF THE DIVINE ILIAD. The question for today’s post relates to meditation. 

Until I actually sat down and meditated, as I do on some mornings when I arise early, I thought that meditation was a complicated and arduous spiritual practice. I mean, quiet the mind from thinking?! My mind?!  My mind never stops thinking.  At least what I used to think of as thinking: a mind busying itself in thought – inquiry, judgement, imagination, figuring things out, etc. That’s not really thinking. It’s entertaining thoughts passing through.  True thinking arises out of stillness when the human mind disengages itself from the stream of thoughts flowing through it and, like a turning water wheel, engages with the stream of consciousness flowing from above, down, inside and out.  My spiritual mentor says it very succinctly in these words from a poem he wrote:

. . . Busy thought and troubled feeling

Trespass not in virtue’s wise serenity

Where firm control and awful power eternally abide.

Here Earth’s pains are healed

And cruel chaos of mind’s spawning

Is called again to order and to beauty.  ( Martin Cecil, “Thus It Is”)

When I simply got still and listened to the sounds around me, I suddenly became aware that I am nothing more than the awareness that makes the sounds and sights in my world heard and seen. Without me, they simply would not exist. Then IT caught me and took me in.  IT being what I was using meditation to find by somehow “going in.” It came forth and found me once I got still enough and allowed the thoughts to enter and leave my mind without following them or chasing them away. You really can’t “go in” to find your Self.  Your Self has to come out into expression to be known through experience. Effortless expression is the key.  There’s no special technique or formula for meditation, as Russell suggests here: 

Q. I know that the wonderful freedom of easy breathing, just as the keenness of the senses, is closely associated with inner-feeling. Is there any simple rule that might be applied to bring about that condition of ecstasy which is characteristic of cosmic conscious people or even to induce meditation?

A. There is no necessity for a technique or formula for meditation. Inner-feeling, or inner-knowing, is the Silent Voice of inspiration within us. One automatically breathes easier as desire for effort ceases. The more forgetful one is of one’s body, the more one is freed for the transition from outer emotions to conscious stillness.

If one desires that ecstasy of being in the God-Light, breathing will become effortless. It will slow the heartbeat also by relaxing the body. One of the greatest means of relaxing the body is to stop thinking and meditate — to become one with the Spirit. 

That is the reward of living the conscious life-the most wonderful thing that can happen to anyone. 

A LENS AND A NET

The human mind is like a lens.  It provides the capacity for focus. As a vibrational substance which arises out of the physical body, it is responsive to energy passing through it, such as thought forms. It concentrates its substance around them in order to magnify them. Like a net for snaring birds, the mind has the ability to snare thoughts and blow them up, expand them and even build concepts on and around then so that they become heavy constructs that clutter the mind and prevent fluidity ad flexibility of thinking. 

Those thoughts can come from without and from within. It’s the ones that come from without that the mind is able to snare based on resonance and frequency size.  Like a net that catches birds but whose mesh is too large to snare butterflies, the mind can only snare large thoughts and concepts. The finer essences of spirit slip right through the net on their way out from within. This is how human being can remain alive, even with destructive thinking and behavior.  Life trickles through even the most crowded and structured mental capacities.

AN UNDERSTANDING HEART

The heart is a finer net that can catch the butterflies of inspiration. These inspirational thoughts lift up the heart and the mind to heights of profound awareness wherein the things of spirit can be contemplated, known and understood. Remember, it was King Solomon who asked the Lord for wisdom and an understanding heart.

There’s a Psalm that speaks of the “snare of the fowler” with which I would like to close this post and leave you to meditate upon. It’s Psalm 91. 

   He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

   I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: My God; in him will I trust.

   Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.

   He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield     and buckler.

   Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor the arrow that flieth by day.    Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor the destruction that wasteth at noonday.

   A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.

   Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.

   Because thou hast made the LORD, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;

   There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.

   For he shall give his angels charge over thee,  lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.

   Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.

   Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.

   He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.

   With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

All this is available for experience during meditation.  And it need not take an hour to become aware of it. Just be still and know . . . and it will find you more quickly than you can find it.  Until my next post,

Apocalypse of Light 2013, Part 5: Questions Answered, page 3 Cosmic Education

GENIUS IS INNATE IN US ALL

The New World Dictionary defines genius as “a great natural ability (for a particular activity); strong disposition or inclination . . . a great mental capacity and inventive ability; esp., great and original creative ability in some art, science, etc.”  The word’s derivation traces back to a belief the Romans had that everyone is given a guardian spirit (genius) at birth; the implication being that this “genie” compels us in our achieving and creative endeavors. Its Latin root is genere, which means to produce.

Walter Russell’s genius came directly from God, as all genius does. His was a “cosmic education.”  In THE MESSAGE OF THE DIVINE ILIAD, Russell answers specific questions relating to genius and particularly to knowing God directly. In the following excerpt, he offers his perspective on book-learning and modern education. When he speaks of God being his teacher, he is actually speaking about his “genie” or guardian spirit, who is, in reality, his divine Self. As a poet once wrote: “God is so close as not even to be near.”

QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Q. Do you advise against reading, studying, and our modern education?  

A. I certainly do not. The reason this question was asked is because I happened not to have been brought up that way. All my life I have known God in me, and when I wanted knowledge I was immediately aware that I had it. God had given it to me as He gives it to all people. So God became my teacher. For that reason I had no need for books or schools or universities.My education was cosmically acquired because I knew God in me. Knowledge can be acquired cosmically if one really knows God in one instead of abstractly believing it without knowing it. It is really easier to acquire it by the hard effort of sensing it through the physical body.

Q. How could you, know such things as chemistry that way. Did you not have to study books to make your chemistry charts?  

A. I could not have made my chemistry charts if I had studied books or taken a university course. No books or universities had that knowledge, for it had not yet come into the world. Also I would have been bound by the traditions of yesterday’s errors of thinking by accepting them as truths, as most students do when they read the works of “authorities” and listen to older teachers to whom they attribute great knowledge.

 Q. How can a person acquire a cosmic education? How can he KNOW things just out of the blue?

A. It is not “just out of the blue” as you say. You, of course, mean the invisible universe. All knowledge is of the invisible universe. That is what I mean by the universe of knowing.

We are all being educated cosmically to some extent, whether we know it or not. Our inspirations come that way. Our inspirations are God’s whisperings to us in His universal language of Light. If desire for knowledge is in our hearts or we write that desire upon our hearts, we will have that knowledge just as sure as the sun goes down over the horizon at night. We are getting it that way gradually during our whole journey from the jungle to the mountain top. If the Light comes slowly, it is because the desire is weak and belief too vague and abstract.

Education is not just stamping upon your memory all of the things that you have read in books. If that is all that happens, you have been made into automatons that are little better than machines. You would repeat records that phonographs can repeat in the same way. If you study music that way and are only a technician, there is no music in you, there is nothing of the spiritual in your knowing.

But if you have taken the skill and information that you have acquired in school from your teachers and you have let it sink into your very Soul, then you have art in you. You have then made the great transition from sensing to knowing which makes geniuses out of those who would otherwise be mechanicians.

 Q. You said that when you desired knowledge, you were immediately aware that you had it. Does God give knowledge that way—instantly?  

A. Yes, but not as you understand it by the way you stated it. We have all knowledge in us. It centers us. It is our inheritance. The Light of our Selves IS all knowledge. We become aware of it gradually as we desire it. We recollect it as we desire it.

Just as the whole of the tree is in its seed before it unfolds, so is the whole of man in man’s seed. Likewise, all knowledge is in the Light which centers man. It unfolds as man desires its unfoldment.

We are all being cosmically educated to the extent that we so desire to be thus educated. The trouble is that mankind has not yet become sufficiently aware of his oneness with God. He is not willing to believe that he can actually commune with God as Self and Self. He thinks of God as outside of himself, as a Deity so superior to himself and so outside of himself that he believes direct contact is impossible.

Q. You actually believe we can contact God directly?

A. Most assuredly I do. How can you reconcile the teachings of universal oneness in the Light to any belief of separateness, or the “crawling worm” and “miserable sinner” attitude of those who cannot think of God as a moment-to-moment companion?

 Q. Is that what you mean by a cosmic education — that you are actually taught what you know directly by our heavenly Father?

A. Most assuredly, yes. You ask that as though you think it strange! Why should the unity between the Creator and His Creation be strange? The moment you actually KNOW of your oneness with your Father in heaven, you KNOW that the kingdom of heaven is within you.

Q. What relation should our school education be to Our cosmic education?

A. Your school and university education must be the foundation or basis of your cosmic education. When you read a book for an hour, ask yourself about it for another hour. Think it over. Ask it of your Inner Self. Something in you will tell you whether it is truth. Knowing-Mind does not register untruth. It registers only truth. Whatever you read that is not in accord with Natural Law will eliminate itself. You will not be able to recognize it as truth so your Consciousness will refuse to accept it.

A school education is necessary for cultural reasons. I do not decry it. I say you must have it, but I had to go faster. I had to demonstrate power for the purposes of giving this Message of The Divine Iliad to the world, to accelerate the spiritual awakening which is now taking place, and for laying new foundations for religion and science. 

Q. How can we apply our school and university training to our cosmic training?

A. By developing your creative faculties as you acquire encyclopedic information. Demonstrate in practice what you learn from books and teachers. Memories stored upon the brain are electrically alive. They are like little entities which want to be heard by being repeated. Make use of them. . . .

The person whose desire is keen in him to do something, and starts doing that thing — learning how to do it in the doing of it — will be the one who will become a master, and no other. 

That person is the genius. The outer human self finds excuses as to why he can’t do something, a common one being “I don’t know how.” The genius says “I can do that” and will prove it by doing it, learning how while doing it.  

Of course, we can only do that which is in us to do. We can only give that which we have. I’ll share more of Walter Russell’s wisdom in my next post.  Until then,
